ORIGINS & FORMATIVE YEARS

Roots, Upbringing & Early Influences

Amitabh Bachchan was born on 11 October 1942 in Allahabad into a distinguished literary family. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a celebrated Hindi poet, and his mother, Teji Bachchan, was a theatre enthusiast. Bachchan graduated from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, and began his working life as a freight broker in a shipping firm in Calcutta, earning a comfortable salary but longing for the expressive creative power of the cinema screen.

THE STRUGGLE & HARDSHIPS

Facing Adversity, Rejections & The Grind

Giving up his stable corporate job, Bachchan arrived in Bombay in 1968 only to face crushing rejection. All India Radio rejected him during an audition for news readers, deeming his deep, resonant baritone unsuited for public broadcast. Between 1969 and 1973, he suffered a devastating streak of twelve consecutive commercial box-office disasters. He lived in shared rooms and slept on Marine Drive benches, and distributors began writing him off as a jinxed actor who was too tall, too brooding, and completely unsuited for the conventional romantic hero roles of the era.

Key Milestone & Career Defining Moment
In 2000, he reinvented himself with Kaun Banega Crorepati and delivered profound character performances in Black, Paa, and Piku, winning four National Film Awards.

MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH & WORKS

Landmark Works & Career Breakthrough

The turning point that transformed Indian cinematic history arrived in 1973 when Salim-Javed and Prakash Mehra cast him in Zanjeer after leading stars like Dev Anand and Dharmendra had turned it down. Bachchan's portrayal of Inspector Vijay Khanna birthed the cultural archetype of the 'Angry Young Man', capturing the simmering angst, unemployment, and systemic frustration of a generation. He followed with an unprecedented era of monumental blockbusters including Deewaar (1975), Sholay (1975), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Trishul (1978), Don (1978), and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978).

SUPREME SUCCESS & LEGACY

Global Stature, Accolades & Enduring Legacy

After surviving a near-fatal intestinal injury on the sets of Coolie in 1982 that united the entire country in prayer, Bachchan later faced near-bankruptcy in the late 1990s with the financial collapse of his company ABCL. In 2000, he reinvented himself with Kaun Banega Crorepati and delivered profound character performances in Black, Paa, and Piku, winning four National Film Awards. Honored with the Padma Vibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Bachchan is celebrated globally as the 'Shahenshah of Bollywood' and the greatest actor in Indian cinema.
