ORIGINS & FORMATIVE YEARS
Roots, Upbringing & Early Influences
Narendra Damodardas Modi was born on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, Mehsana district, Bombay State (now Gujarat), into a lower-middle-class family belonging to the Other Backward Class (OBC) Modh-Ghanchi community. He was the third of six children born to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and Hiraben Modi. In his childhood, Modi assisted his father running a small tea stall at the Vadnagar railway station and later ran a tea canteen with his brother near a state transport bus terminus.
THE STRUGGLE & HARDSHIPS
Facing Adversity, Rejections & The Grind
His youth was characterized by wanderlust, austere discipline, and deep spiritual restlessness. At age seventeen, he left home to travel across northern and northeastern India, spending months in ashrams in Kolkata, Siliguri, and the Himalayas, studying spiritual philosophy. Returning to Gujarat in 1971, he became a full-time pracharak for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). For decades, Modi lived an ascetic life, traveling across districts on state transport buses, sleeping on office floors, washing his own clothes, and operating underground disguised as a sikh during the 1975 Emergency to print and distribute banned democratic literature.
