ORIGINS & FORMATIVE YEARS

Roots, Upbringing & Early Influences

Virat Kohli was born on 5 November 1988 in Delhi into a Punjabi Hindu family. His father Prem Kohli worked as a criminal lawyer and his mother Saroj was a homemaker. At just nine years of age, his father enrolled him in the West Delhi Cricket Academy under coach Rajkumar Sharma after witnessing his obsessive batting practice in the narrow streets of Uttam Nagar. Kohli developed a fierce, competitive edge early on, dominating Delhi junior cricket and captaining India to victory in the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia.

THE STRUGGLE & HARDSHIPS

Facing Adversity, Rejections & The Grind

The defining moment of his grit occurred in December 2006 during a Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka. His father passed away suddenly from a brain stroke at 3 AM. Despite the unbearable shock and grief, eighteen-year-old Kohli returned to Feroz Shah Kotla at 8 AM, scored a fighting ninety runs to save Delhi from following on, and walked straight from the pitch to the crematorium to perform his father's funeral rites. In his early international career, he faced criticism for aggression, party lifestyle, and technical vulnerabilities outside off-stump during the 2014 England tour where he averaged an agonizing 13.4 runs across ten innings.
