ORIGINS & FORMATIVE YEARS

Roots, Upbringing & Early Influences

Born in 1929 into a destitute Musahar Dalit family in Gehlaur village near Gaya, Bihar, Dashrath Manjhi worked as an agricultural laborer in a village geographically isolated by a rugged quartzite ridge that separated his community from the nearest hospital and town by over fifty-five kilometers.

THE STRUGGLE & HARDSHIPS

Facing Adversity, Rejections & The Grind

In 1959, his beloved wife Falguni Devi fell from the treacherous mountain ridge while carrying him lunch and suffered critical injuries. Due to the impassable mountain barrier, she could not reach medical treatment in Wazirganj in time and tragically died in his arms, leaving Manjhi shattered and consumed by the resolve that no other villager should ever perish for lack of a road.
