ORIGINS & FORMATIVE YEARS

Roots, Upbringing & Early Influences

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1919, Desmond Thomas Doss was raised as a devout Seventh-day Adventist who embraced the commandment 'Thou shalt not kill'. When World War II began, he voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army but refused to carry a rifle, insisting on serving as an unarmed combat medic.

THE STRUGGLE & HARDSHIPS

Facing Adversity, Rejections & The Grind

Doss endured relentless verbal abuse, ostracization, and court-martial threats from superior officers and fellow soldiers who branded him a coward. In May 1945 during the Battle of Okinawa, his battalion was ordered to assault the Maeda Escarpment, a 400-foot sheer cliff known as Hacksaw Ridge bristling with concealed Japanese artillery and machine-gun bunkers.
