ORIGINS & FORMATIVE YEARS

Roots, Upbringing & Early Influences

Born in 1959 into the indigenous Mishing tribe in Jorhat, Assam, Jadav Payeng grew up along the volatile banks of the Brahmaputra River, developing an intimate kinship with the riverine ecosystem and native flora and fauna.

THE STRUGGLE & HARDSHIPS

Facing Adversity, Rejections & The Grind

In 1979, following catastrophic monsoon floods, sixteen-year-old Payeng stumbled upon a vast sandbar littered with thousands of dead snakes that had washed ashore and perished from heat exposure on the treeless sand. Heartbroken by the sight, he realized that deforestation and erosion would soon make the entire region uninhabitable for wildlife and humans alike.

MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH & WORKS

Landmark Works & Career Breakthrough

Payeng resolved to transform the wasteland alone. Starting with twenty bamboo seedlings, he returned to the barren sandbar every single day for over forty years, planting trees, transporting red ants to enrich the soil, and hand-watering saplings through elaborate bamboo drip systems. Today, his single-handed effort has grown into the 'Molai Forest', spanning 1,360 acres—larger than New York's Central Park—teeming with elephants, Bengal tigers, rhinos, and hundreds of bird species.
