ORIGINS & FORMATIVE YEARS

Roots, Upbringing & Early Influences

Born in London in 1909 to German-Jewish immigrant parents who had converted to Christianity, Nicholas Winton worked as a young stockbroker on the London Stock Exchange with a keen socialist conscience and passion for humanitarian causes.

THE STRUGGLE & HARDSHIPS

Facing Adversity, Rejections & The Grind

In December 1938, on the eve of a skiing holiday in Switzerland, Winton diverted to Prague to assist a friend working with refugees fleeing the Nazi annexation of the Sudetenland. Horrified by the refugee camps filled with vulnerable families facing imminent Nazi occupation, he abandoned his holiday to set up an impromptu rescue bureau from his Prague hotel room.

MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH & WORKS

Landmark Works & Career Breakthrough

Winton single-handedly established the Czech Kindertransport, organizing eight train convoys across Germany and the Netherlands to Britain, securing foster families for every child, and personally raising the fifty-pound guarantee bond required by the British government for each entry permit. His operation successfully evacuated 669 predominantly Jewish children to safety before the outbreak of World War II closed the borders.

SUPREME SUCCESS & LEGACY

Global Stature, Accolades & Enduring Legacy

Winton kept his monumental rescue entirely secret for fifty years until his wife discovered a scrapbook in their attic containing the children's names. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003, Winton lived to age 106, affectionately celebrated as Britain's Schindler alongside hundreds of descendants known as Nicky's Children.
