ORIGINS & FORMATIVE YEARS

Roots, Upbringing & Early Influences

Born in 1948 in Wardha, Maharashtra, Sindhutai was deemed an unwanted female child ('Chindi') and married off at age twelve to a man three times her age, enduring severe domestic abuse and rural patriarchal servitude.

THE STRUGGLE & HARDSHIPS

Facing Adversity, Rejections & The Grind

When she was nine months pregnant at age twenty, her husband violently beat her and threw her into a cow shelter to die. She gave birth to her daughter alone, cut the umbilical cord with a sharp stone, and was cast out by her family. To avoid starvation, she slept in cremation grounds and begged for food at railway platforms, singing bhajans to survive.

MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH & WORKS

Landmark Works & Career Breakthrough

While begging at railway stations, Sindhutai encountered abandoned street children starving in the cold. Rather than despairing over her own misery, she resolved to become their mother. For five decades, she begged across Maharashtra to feed, shelter, and educate abandoned orphans, never discriminating between castes, eventually establishing four grand ashrams that nurtured over 1,500 children.

SUPREME SUCCESS & LEGACY

Global Stature, Accolades & Enduring Legacy

Known as 'Mai' (Mother) by thousands of her grown foster children—many of whom became doctors, lawyers, engineers, and teachers—Sindhutai was conferred the Padma Shri in 2021 and over 750 national and international awards, remembered as the compassionate conscience of Maharashtra.
